Something that's always really annoyed me about Boomers and Gen X is their weird fetish/fixation on foreign cultures being better than ours. The Boomers started it in the 60s and 70s with going to India and meditating and starting yoga and going vegetarian and hanging out with Indian gurus. Gen X is fixated on "Native Americans" like think of them always wanting to go on vision quests, so many movies of these idiots taking peyote in the desert and finding spirit animals (Johnny Depp literally has anIndian tattoo lol, natural born killers, they do peyote in young guns, there's literally so many examples)

Like Gremlins positing that the Chinese are these wonderful, mystical animal-loving people so in tune with nature I actually offensive if you think about it. These are the same people who eat dogs and cats and live sea creatures, they are the most polluting people on earth, have literally turned their country into a disgusting polluted shit hole but White Americans are the unnatural monsters. Give me a fucking break.

Great talk with great energy about a film that I enjoyed a lot back in the days. Strangely enough, I found this segment to be quite positive and uplifting. I suppose that´s a good fit for the season. Thanks to both of you.

I think that in a lot of movies they push storylines to showcase special effects. In the seventies it was car chases, in the eighties animatronics, now it's CG.

I liked Gremlins as a kid, it was one of a few films I had on VHS so I watched it a lot. It was also hugely popular with kids at school, I had a Gizmo soft toy, this was in the early 90s I think. It was a violent movie looking back at it... and as a kid I found the dead dad in the chimney stuff quite jarring. Enjoyed listening to your thoughts on this - thank you both.

Thanks, enjoyed this. It's hard to know if the Gremlins are meant to represent blacks or the YKWs. It's an attack on Xmas but specifically the type of Xmas that the YKWs deliberately manipulated the West into celebrating - one where Christ is virtually forgotten and Santa is very much the main man.

Blackpilled's brilliant 'Rudolph the ***ish Reindeer' video (Bitchute) explores this theme very well and I think is a must-watch. However, what Spielberg is looking to do here is unclear to me. It's most-likely that the Gremlins are there to represent African-Americans, I think. The shopkeeper warns against providing them with water (spiritually this may represent transformation and potentiality) along with light (I'm fairly certain this means learning or enlightenment). I have no idea what the significance of being fed after dark is though.

Notably, there is no warning about buying the Gremlins as a commodity. It's almost as if Spielberg is telling America that it will pay a heavy price for treating its slaves like humans, rather than just livestock. However, it might be that the Gremlins don't represent any group of people at all and are just the Fates and the Furies of our own degeneracy.

But the incident with the father and the chimney is pretty dark. It's like Spielberg has gone to an art gallery armed with a knife and just slashed the painting called 'Christmas'. He wants to destroy the event even for the young children that have come to watch the movie. It's his own people that have deliberately made the festive season about vacuous secular greed and it's almost like he's gone rogue here.

I hated the movie. I was about 13 when I watched it and, looking back, I guess it was one of the first movies that made be realise the world was just a bit shitty. I'm not sure I will ever fully understand it, though.

Morgoth, I wonder if you and Endeavour have ever thought of dissecting the movie Jaws? I find the fact that you only have to spin the letter 'a' 180 degrees to get a far-more loaded title unlikely to be mere coincidence. :-)

In actually have a YouTube video looking at Jaws using Zizek's lens. It's centred on how capitalism deals with existential threats to itself. Zizek's thesis is that they outsource to dirty work to a third party (Fascists) or Quint in Jaws.

Brilliant, well that's getting watched this morning. Oh God it's that guy isn't it? I remember him doing the thing with Jordan Peterson a few years ago. If he and Roy Hattersley had ever had a stand-up row, facing each other over a table, I'm pretty sure both would have drowned in spittle! I've just watched it. A short video but it throws up so many questions and I'm going to have to stop myself from hijacking this thread with them. Definitely worth a revisit though (as a theme), perhaps with somebody reasonable on the left? How about Jimmy Dore? He would have been about 11 or 12 when the film came out, so it was probably a big thing in his life. Dore's father was a cop and a Reagan Democrat, as I'm sure Brody would have become. Dore also drove forklift trucks, as a young man, so if the analysis becomes a shit-show you can at least both get into it over whiplash and lower-back pain.

Never seen it or this Morgoth chat yet, but from your description it could be a generic Illuminati type message in which we, humanity, are seen as gremlins and those charged with our care are to deny us chaos/liberation/potential and knowledge and it's our nature to destroy and break down the system once we are given these. I suspect it has the traditional "warns against but actually supports and prepares the way for" technique that you often see in dystopian and sci-fi films.

An enjoyable review. I vividly recall seeing Gremlins at the ABC cinema in Bradford at the very start of January 1985. The weather outside was sappropriately icy and snowy. I really enjoyed it... but remember being disturbed by the 'Santa in the chimney' tale.
